Jordan insists Bent sale suited Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur first-team coach Joe Jordan says the club do not regret selling Darren Bent in 2009, despite his goalscoring form for Sunderland and Aston Villa - and the fact he has dislodged Jermain Defoe in the England squad.

• Redknapp returns for Villa clash

Bent returns to White Hart Lane on Monday night as England's first-choice striker - in the absence of Wayne Rooney - but Jordan insists Tottenham had to sell the 27-year-old in order to progress as a club.

Bent was sold to Sunderland for £16.5 million in 2009 and scored 24 Premier League goals in his debut season on Wearside to earn an £18 million transfer to Villa last January.

And while the former Charlton striker has established himself as a regular goalscorer, Defoe has lost his place in Spurs' starting line-up and has slipped out of Fabio Capello's England squad.

However, Jordan insists the decision to retain Defoe and sell Bent was not based on goalscoring alone.

"Jermain was scoring goals at the time. He was doing okay," said Jordan. "Darren has always been a player that has scored goals. But here he was competing with two or three other strikers who were equally good.

"Now and again someone has got to be sacrificed for hid good and the good of the team. You have to look at the bigger picture."

Jordan, who will be joined on the bench on Monday night by manager Harry Redknapp after his heart surgery, also tipped Defoe to win back his place in the England squad ahead of Euro 2012.

"Between now and then you have to prove you are a good player, so I wouldn't say that [Bent will go]," said Jordan. "Jermain can do that. He is waiting for his opportunity. There will be competition ... you have got to make a run.

"There will be very few players selected for their country in this tournament if their form is not good between now and then. If you drop off, you might have been the person scoring the winning goal in qualifying, but if someone else emerges, you could be left behind."

Defoe has scored four goals in eight Premier League games for Spurs this season. He scored in Tottenham's last game, a 3-1 win at Fulham, after coming off the bench.
