Atletico edge Levante in five-goal thriller

Atletico Madrid cast off their indifferent form to inflict a third successive Primera Division defeat on deflated Levante as they recorded a 3-2 win.

• Saturday's La Liga review

Gregorio Manzano's side have been characteristically inconsistent so far this term but were up against a Levante side whose early-season bubble has burst in recent weeks.

The hosts were superior throughout in Sunday night's game, with Pizzi giving them the lead and Adrian Lopez and Diego scoring after Xavi Torres had briefly put Levante level. Ruben's injury-time strike proved a mere consolation.

Referee Clos Gomez called a halt Granada's home game with Mallorca after one of his assistants was struck by an object thrown from the crowd.

Assistant referee Aguilar Rodriguez was lining up for a Mallorca corner when his cheek was immediately bloodied after being hit by an umbrella thrown from the crowd. As a result, Gomez had no hesitation in leaving the field and taking his assistants, Rodriguez and Marco Martinez, with him, abandoning the game not long after.

The umbrella appeared to be thrown from the home fans, who minutes earlier had been celebrating their side turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage. Carlos Martins, whose young son is currently ill in hospital, capped the turnaround with a 25-yard strike that added to Guilherme Siqueira's goal. Victor had given Mallorca the lead.

Athletic Bilbao stretched their unbeaten run to 11 games with a deserved 2-1 win at Sevilla. Marcelo Bielsa's side were by far the better team throughout and went ahead after only five minutes when captain Andoni Iraola smashed a shot in off the post from 20 yards.

Sevilla equalised before half-time as Jesus Navas produced just as good a finish as he latched on to Freddie Kanoute's flick-on. However, the visitors continued to boss the game and they deservedly got the winner when Iker Muniain fed Oscar De Marcos, who saw his first effort blocked by Javi Varas before stroking home the rebound.

Victory means Athletic move up to sixth and are now just one point and place behind Sevilla.

Nacho Novo scored a dramatic late winner as Sporting Gijon came from behind to beat Getafe 2-1 at El Molinon.

The visitors went in front 10 minutes before half-time thanks to a fantastic individual effort from Miku, but Sporting were level just before the break as Miguel Moya failed to deal with a corner and Oscar Trejo took advantage of his weak punch to slot home.

Getafe were then controversially reduced to 10 men with half an hour remaining, with Abdel Barrada very unfortunate to be given a second yellow card for simulation and Sporting, who subsequently struggled to make the most of their man advantage, finally made the breakthrough in the final minute as Moya again spilled Sebastian Eguren's shot and Novo was on hand to head in the rebound.

Real Sociedad extended their winless run in La Liga to eight games to remain in deep trouble at the bottom of the table following a 0-0 draw against Espanyol.

The San Sebastian side have now taken just two points from the last 24 available after failing to find a way past the visitors, who drew for only the second time in 12 matches this season.

Osasuna extended their unbeaten run at home this season to six games but were made to battle hard for a point in a 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

The draw sees both sides maintain their place in the top half of the table, with Rayo one place and point above Osasuna in eighth.
