Shelvey interested in Scotland switch

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam says team-mate Jonjo Shelvey wants to switch his international allegiance to Scotland to play for the national side.

Adam, 25, joined Liverpool from Blackpool where Shelvey is currently on loan and believes the young midfielder can play a role in Scotland's bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

He said: "Jonjo is really interested in playing for us. He wants to represent Scotland - he's told me he is up for it. He told me a while ago he had a Scottish grandad and I said, 'Why don't you play for us?'

"We need as many good players as we can if we want to reach the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. If Jonjo can improve the squad, why not? It doesn't matter where he was born. He is eligible and can play."

Shelvey, born in Romford, joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2010 where he holds the record for youngest first-team player and youngest goalscorer.
