Chelsea probe Sturridge abuse claim

Chelsea have started an investigation after receiving an allegation Daniel Sturridge was racially abused by one of the club's own fans.

Sturridge was reportedly the subject of taunts from a Chelsea supporter at the top of the main stand at Genk earlier this month. As the 22-year-old prepared to make his appearance as a substitute in the Champions League clash, the fan is alleged to have shouted: "They are bringing on the monkeys".

"We have had a new complaint from a fan that we are taking very seriously indeed," a Chelsea spokesman told the Guardian. "We are carrying out an immediate investigation led by our head of security that is likely to involve the police as well. We will not tolerate any form of racism and have encouraged our supporters to help identify those responsible and we will track them down."

The complaint was sent to club chief executive Ron Gourlay via email from another Chelsea supporter. The accused was described as a well-dressed, middle-aged man.

Sturridge, meanwhile, is set to make his national team debut against Sweden at Wembley on Tuesday, while his club captain John Terry - under investigation for racial abuse himself - resumes the England captaincy.
