Suarez: I'm not as good as Messi

Luis Suarez has played down his role in Uruguay's' recent 12-match unbeaten run and laughed off comparisons between himself and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi.

• Tabarez hails 'extraordinary' Suarez

Suarez, 24, has been in scintillating form for his country this year and drew plaudits again over the weekend for a four-goal haul in Uruguay's World Cup qualifying victory over Chile.

The Liverpool forward also starred in this year's Copa America for La Celeste, scoring four goals as Oscar Tabarez's side lifted lifted the trophy, with his displays seeing him crowned Player of the Tournament.

Uruguay have now gone 12 matches undefeated since a friendly defeat to Germany in May but Suarez - who has been lauded in some quarters for being as influential a player as two-time World Player of the Year Messi - was keen to credit the entire team for the impressive sequence, as well as dismissing comparisons with the Barcelona playmaker.

"Comparisons with Messi embarrass me," Suarez told El Pais. "It also makes me smile but I feel that the comparisons are just the reaction from the Uruguay fans, as everything seems to be going well at the moment.

"I am happy but we have to look at the work of the whole team as it is not just about one player."

Meanwhile, Suarez has moved to allay fears that he is carrying a back injury after he came off 13 minutes from the end of Uruguay's victory over Chile, insisting he is ready to play in an international friendly against Italy on Tuesday and a crunch Premier League clash against Chelsea this weekend.

"I was a little scared by the pain I had in the game but treatment I had was just a precaution and it does not hurt,'' he said. "There will be no problem but the decision is going to be the coach.

"I risk a lot to Liverpool. I have a very important game next weekend against Chelsea. I love to play every game for the national team but now they are several tough matches in the club and you have to give a little priority.''
