Coach says Roar aren't the best ever club

Brisbane Roar coach Ange Postecoglou says the A-League champions can't be regarded as Australian soccer's greatest-ever team despite their record 33-match unbeaten streak.

Despite many critics believing the red-hot Roar are worthy of the tag, Postecoglou stressed Brisbane needed to defend their title to deserve the honour.

No club in the seven-season history of the A-League has gone back-to-back but six did it over 27 years of the old National Soccer League.

Postecoglou, himself, took South Melbourne to two consecutive NSW titles in the late 1990s while Sydney City were champions three years in a row from 1980 to 1982.

"As far as the greatest team ever, that's open for debate and I've heard a lot of opinions from people suggesting that other sides were better than us," he said on Friday.

"Because I'm one of the few people who have actually traversed both eras, unlike others who weren't actually involved, I can comfortably say that we're not the greatest team ever because we've won just one title, and that doesn't give us that tag.

"But I can also confidently say that no other team has gone on a run like us and had a performance like us.

"The beauty of what we've done and the credit to the players is that all these other champion teams, that may have potentially may been better than our's, cracked under the pressure of being champions, of being hunted all the time and this team hasn't for 33 games.

"That's an achievement in itself and that's what stands alone.

"That's what I'll take away from what we've done as a football club but we want to get better."

Brisbane hold a four-point lead at the top of the A-League ladder going into Sunday's home game against injury-riddled Wellington.
