Chile stars sent home in disgrace

Chile have dropped five players from their squad for two World Cup qualifiers after they breached a team curfew, national team boss Claudio Borghi has confirmed.

West Brom defender Gonzalo Jara, Birmingham winger Jean Beausejour, Atalanta defender Carlos Carmona, Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and Palmeiras' Jorge Valdivia and were the players involved.

It was reported locally that the players were returning from Valdivia's daughter's baptism and had been drinking.

Borghi told a news conference the players missed their curfew by 45 minutes on Tuesday and were "in a state not adequate for the Chilean national team, for a professional player''.

Borghi hit out at the players' behaviour after dropping them for the World Cup qualifiers away to Uruguay on Friday and at home to Paraguay on Tuesday.

Borghi said: "It's hurtful, not just for me, but for the whole coaching staff.''

Borghi said the five players were "unable to defend themselves'' and "not in good condition'' when he went to their rooms to demand an explanation.

"If you ask me what they drank, I have no idea,'' Borghi said.

Borghi added that any further punishment would be decided by the Chile football federation. He said: "I can't sanction the players. But I can leave them out of the national side.''

Jara was doubtful for the two matches because of injury and Beausejour was suspended for the Uruguay game.

Milovan Mirosevic, Felipe Gutierrez, Francisco Silva and Fernando Meneses and Jose Rojas have been called up to the squad as replacements.
