Welbeck determined to prove worth

Danny Welbeck feels he has matured as a player in the past 12 months and is determined to prove he is worthy of a long-term stay at Manchester United.

After spending last season on loan at Sunderland, Welbeck returned to Old Trafford in the summer and was thrust into the first-team reckoning by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Despite competition from Javier Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen for the slot alongside Wayne Rooney in attack, Welbeck has held his own this term.

The forward, who is in line to make his first start for England against Spain, is determined not to fall out of the picture.

"It's always going to be really tough to make it at United," Welbeck told The Sun. "If you are coming through the youth ranks you see a lot of people come and go.

"I'm a Manc and I've been a United fan all my life. I'm not just a player, I'm a fan as well, so I just want the best for United.

"Every time I'm on the pitch I'm just going to give it 100%. I've seen players go and I just don't want to do that."
