Barca president: La Liga too big

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has said that he thinks La Liga should be cut down from 20 to 16 clubs, while also criticising the spending of foreign owners in Spain.

Rosell told the International Football Arena conference in a debate on Monday that a smaller league would be more competitive.

"My opinion is that our league has too many clubs," Rosell said. "We have 20 and we should go down to 18, then to 16."

With the financial problems in the Spanish game, Rosell also said that he was opposed to foreign ownership of the country's clubs and made it clear that he is backing a plan to share the television money out more equally.

Currently, Barcelona and Real Madrid sign their own broadcast deals and collect vastly more revenue than their domestic rivals. But Rosell believes that needs to change.

"It is the only league where TV rights are negotiated individually,'' he said. ''Some time in the next three or four or five years we have to put it all in one pot and make the distribution the way it is in Serie A and the Premier League.''
