Rangers go 12 points clear

Nikica Jelavic grabbed two goals for Rangers as they extended their lead at the top of the SPL table to 12 points with a 3-1 win over Dundee United at Ibrox.

Jelavic fired the Gers ahead after 19 minutes, losing his marker to meet Matt McKay's cross with a bullet header. The Croatian doubled Rangers' advantage from the penalty spot with half an hour remaining after Paul Dixon had brought down Gregg Wylde.

Jelavic had the chance to complete his hat-trick, but he blazed over the bar, and just moments later Jon Daly pulled one back for Dundee United with a header, but to no avail. Jelavic had a hand in the final goal, putting sufficient pressure on Garry Kenneth, who diverted Steven Whittaker's cross into his own net to seal all three points for the champions. Dundee United finished the match with ten men after Wylde was sent off for an off-the-ball incident.

Andrew Shinnie grabbed a hat-trick as bottom side Inverness Caledonian Thistle stunned Kilmarnock 6-3 in a nine-goal thriller at Rugby Park. Jonny Hayes and Gregory Tade were also on the scoresheet as Caley came from behind to take a much-needed three points to ease the pressure on manager Terry Butcher.

Dean Shiels fired Kilmarnock ahead after a Paul Heffernan backheel, but Shinnie grabbed his equaliser after running onto a through-ball from Jonny Hayes to ensure the sides went into the break on level terms. Hayes fired Inverness ahead after a low drilled shot from outside the area shortly after the break, but it was Shinnie who inspired a Caley goalrush - his 59th-minute goal sparked three goals in six minutes as the visitors tightened their grip on the match with Tade netting the fourth before Shinnie completed his hat-trick.

Shiels converted from the spot to pull one back for Killie, but Tade once again restored a four-goal advantage before Heffernan grabbed a consolation goal in the final minute.

An early goal was the difference between the two sides as Dunfermline Athletic beat Hibernian 1-0 at Easter Road. Austin McCann capitalised on a shaky start by the Hibs defence to lash home at the backpost. Meanwhile, in the battle of fifth versus sixth, Hearts and St Mirren played out a goalless draw at St Mirren Park.
