France to face Russia in March friendly

Premier League transfers in numbers

Whelan: I would sack Martinez

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has insisted he would have no reservations about sacking Roberto Martinez if he thought it would be in the club's best interests.

Prior to this weekend's round of matches, Wigan find themselves bottom of the Premier League table and three points from safety, having managed just one win this season.

Whelan and Martinez have formed a strong rapport since the Spaniard took over at the DW Stadium in 2009, but the side's chairman concedes, in spite of their friendship, he would remove the coach from his position if he deemed it necessary.

"I've sacked a few managers here and I had a run where I sacked two within six months or so," Whelan said in the Daily Mirror.

"Everything comes down to what's in the best interests of the football club. Personalities don't come into it. What you want is the club being run properly from top to bottom, and Roberto does that.

"Our confidence is in him and if there's any man who could bring our club back up that league, it's Roberto.

"If I thought for one moment that by sacking him I could keep Wigan in the Premier League, I'd do it tomorrow, without question, because I only want what's best for Wigan. But I know that would be the wrong thing to do."
