Bakkal sees good times ahead

Feyenoord's on-loan midfielder Otman Bakkal maintains the Rotterdammers are bigger than his parent club PSV Eindhoven but believes they have to eliminate the inconsistency which is damaging their progress in the Eredivisie.

Feyenoord, under Ronald Koeman, have been much better this season than last and currently lie in sixth place, 10 points adrift of leaders AZ Alkmaar. But they are still plagued by performances which border on the farcical.

With the 10-0 hammering at PSV still fresh in the memory, Feyenoord turned in an equally abject display in going down 6-0 at FC Groningen last weekend. Prior to that, they lost 2-1 at Eerste Divisie side Go Ahead Eagles in the KNVB-Beker.

Bakkal told Voetbal International: "Feyenoord must start to think like a top club again and I do believe this will happen. But then we should not go out of the cup against the Go Ahead Eagles and then undermine our credibility further against FC Groningen. This means we still have a long way to go.''

Despite their sticky recent run, Bakkal remains impressed by the fervour of the Feyenoord fans and compares them favourably to those who follow PSV.

"I think Feyenoord means more to the people than PSV do,'' he said. "Feyenoord supporters know what suffering is. At PSV it has mostly been good times.

"After Feyenoord lost 10-0 to PSV there were still about 45,000 people there for the game against VVV-Venlo a few days later. That's Feyenoord. I knew that this was a big club but if you are inside it you realise how big. People here live for the club which is a different approach to PSV.''

Bakkal and Feyenoord host NEC Nijmegen on Saturday, the same day as NAC Breda take on high-flying Vitesse Arnhem, Groningen go to RKC Waalwijk and Roda JC host Heerenveen.

AZ and PSV are in Europa League action on Thursday and therefore do not resume Eredivisie action until Sunday.

AZ, unbeaten in the league since August, host ADO Den Haag while PSV, who trail the Alkmaar club by six points, meet Heracles at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven.

Ajax go into their game at FC Utrecht on the back of an impressive 4-0 thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League while 2010 champions FC Twente take on De Graafschap.

The weekend programme starts on Friday night when second-bottom VVV-Venlo take on Excelsior, who are a place and a point worse off.
