Schweinsteiger to undergo surgery

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to undergo surgery after breaking his collarbone in a Champions League clash on Wednesday evening.

• Rummenigge remains coy
• Hitzfeld: Fergie wants to avoid Bayern
• Bayern blog: Fortress Allianz Arena

Schweinsteiger has been in fine form for club and country this season, but will now miss Germany's upcoming international friendlies against Ukraine and the Netherlands, as well as Bayern's Bundesliga blockbuster against Borussia Dortmund. The 90-time Germany international is expected to spend the next month watching from the sidelines after after colliding with Napoli midfielder Gokhan Inler.

"He broke his collarbone," Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes confirmed. "He will be operated on tonight or tomorrow.

"The doctors say he will be out four to six weeks but I do not want to commit myself to that. I will see how long once he starts his recovery. Of course, he will be missed as he is an important part of our midfield and was in great shape."

Bayern went on to win 3-2 against Napoli courtesy of a Mario Gomez first-half hat-trick. The German giants currently sit atop Group A in the Champions League on 10 points.

Bayern striker Mario Gomez has described the shock of the team at the injury.

Gomez told UEFA's website: "The team was shocked. It took us a while to find our feet again and clear our heads.

"Basti is our midfield motor. He dictates the tempo of the game and you could see that we lost our rhythm without him. It's a bitter one, but we're a top team and if we want to stay that way we'll have to compensate for his absence.

"No matter how bad the injury is, we were obviously all affected by it.''
