Kompany insists: We can beat Bayern

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says his side can beat Napoli and Bayern Munich to book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League after their 3-0 thumping of Villarreal in Spain.

•  Villarreal 0-3 Man City

Yaya Toure scored either side of a Mario Balotelli penalty as City sank the Yellow Submarine 3-0 in Spain, a result which left them two points ahead of Napoli in the race for a qualification spot.

They face the Italians away from home in their next game and Kompany told ITV1: "It's a big game, but that's what you play Champions League for. We've always thought if we do our job properly then we are as strong as anyone. We don't need to look too much at the other teams, we can win every game.''

On the game, the Belgium defender added: "We put in a good shift and did everything as we planned it. We didn't do anything crazy, we were patient and it paid off for us.

"I think defensively this was our strongest performance in the Champions League, then our strikers are lethal on their day and they did a great job today. We have scored goals nearly every game, a lot of goals. There are a lot of partnerships there and that's a good thing, we can change a lot of players and we don't lose strength, which is important.''

Manager Roberto Mancini was understated in his reaction to another hugely-impressive display, which brought his side their seventh successive victory in all competitions.

They have also scored 27 goals in that period, but Mancini was quick to look ahead to Barclays Premier League encounters with QPR and Newcastle before the crunch trip to Italy.

"We know every game is hard,'' Mancini said. "Now we have another game in 60 hours, it will be hard, we will have to change some players. We are going very well but we want to improve, this is possible.''

The only downside to Mancini's night was a thumping self-inflicted blow as he banged his head on the roof of his dug-out, which he said remained: "So sore, so sore. I took a knock, very hard,'' he added. "Five years ago here (I did) the same.''
