Ferguson confirms Cleverley absence

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Tom Cleverley will miss Manchester United's Champions League tie with Otelul Galati on Wednesday. The midfielder may also be absent for Saturday's Premier League game with Sunderland.

Cleverley was substituted during the 1-0 victory over Everton at the weekend after suffering an ankle injury, and it appears he will miss two games as a result.

"Tom won't play tomorrow," Ferguson said. "It is not serious. He got a little tweak on Saturday but we have to take the long view.

"We need to make sure he will be available for a long period, rather than play him again and the decision comes back to haunt us, so I think he will miss the Saturday game also."

Cleverley has made an impressive start to first-team life at United after a spell on loan at Wigan, but he has already spent time on the sidelines this season with ligament damage.

He had been tipped for inclusion in the England squad for the friendlies against Spain and Sweden at Wembley this month but he now faces a battle to prove his fitness.
