Magee gives Galaxy the advantage

The Los Angeles Galaxy will take an advantage into the second leg of their MLS Cup play-off against New York Red Bulls as they won 1-0 at the Red Bull Arena on Sunday.

Robbie Keane had already hit a post for the Galaxy by the time Magee gave them a 15th-minute lead after being picked out by a David Beckham free-kick.

The Red Bulls had numerous chances to equalise but found Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders in fine form. Saunders saved from Dane Richards at the start of the second half and again shortly after when Joel Lindpere found space in the six-yard box.

At the other end, Landon Donovan was denied by Frank Rost before Saunders saved the visitors again with a wonderful late save from a Rafael Marquez drive.

A physical contest threatened to boil over several times with Thierry Henry fortunate to stay on the field after a late kick at Beckham after already receiving a yellow card for a poor tackle on the former England captain.

And after the final whistle Marquez started a melee following a confrontation with Adam Cristman which saw the Mexican aim a headbutt at the Galaxy substitute.

The winner of the replay will take on Seattle Sounders or Real Salt Lake, with Salt Lake taking a 3-0 advantage from the first-leg.

In the other half of the draw, Houston Dynamo picked up their first ever win over Philadelphia Union, 2-1.

Andre Hainault headed the vistors ahead from a free-kick inside five minutes, but just a minute later Union's leading scorer Sebastien Le Toux got an equaliser after a chipped pass from Michael Farfan.

The scoring was complete in the first half though, as Calen Carr latched onto Brian Ching's throughball to slot past goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon and give his side the advantage going into the second leg.

Elsewhere, Teal Bunbury scored both goals to lead Kansas City to a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in their semi-final.

The home side were up against it all night and lost Caleb Folan and Kosuke Kimura to first-half injuries before Bunbury gave the visitors a 49th-minute lead when he got on the end of Julio Cesar's pass.

Things then went from bad to worse for Colorado when Tyrone Marshall, on for Folan, was sent off for bringing down Bunbury in the box, and the striker got up to double his side's lead from the spot.
