Osasuna halt Levante charge

Shock La Liga pacesetters Levante suffered their first defeat of the season, 2-0 to Osasuna, as they dropped into third place after wins for Real Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday.

Osasuna's Alvaro Cejudo smashed in the first in the 40th minute and it was not long before the second arrived in somewhat scrappy fashion from Nino.

Cejudo was later sent off for a second bookable offence, but Levante were unable to make the extra man count and their astonishing seven-match winning run came to an end.

Atletico Madrid overcame Real Zaragoza 3-1 with a strong performance at the Estadio Vicente Calderon to end their winless run of seven games in all competitions.

Adrian scored a brace either side of Alvaro Dominguez's header before Atletico switched off and allowed Zaragoza to pull one back thanks to a Helder Postiga header.

The result will come as a big relief to Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano, who has been under increasing pressure to quit, especially after Thursday's 3-0 loss at Athletic Bilbao.

Malaga ended a run of three successive defeats with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol, although a controversial penalty decision settled the contest at La Rosaleda.

The home side went in front early on through Jose Salomon Rondon, only for Alvaro Vazquez to equalise at the end of the first half.

But a contentious handball decision enabled Antonio Apono to restore Malaga's lead, and they kept their noses in front for the rest of the match to end a three-match winning run for their Barcelona-based opponents.

Mate Bilic came off the bench to fire an equaliser for Sporting Gijon in the 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao but a third successive win was beyond Manuel Preciado's side.

Sporting were bottom of the table before posting back-to-back Primera Division wins over Granada and Real Mallorca, and they headed into their clash against in-form Bilbao at El Molinon hoping to keep the run going.

They fell behind to a close-range volley from Markel Susaeta, but Bilic rescued a point with a long-range strike which took a hefty deflection off team-mate David Barral.

Christian Stuani came off the bench to hand Racing Santander their first win of the season with the only goal against a forlorn Real Betis.

Both sides were unlucky not to score before half-time as Alex Pozuelo and Aldekoaotalora Ustaritz hit the bar for the visitors and Marc Torrejon also saw his header come off the woodwork for Racing.

Ariel Nahuelpan spurned a great chance to put Racing ahead when he headed wide 10 minutes into the second half, but instead it was his replacement Stuani who got the all-important goal as he was brought down by Isidoro in his first involvement and then dusted himself down to smash home the resulting penalty.
