Aston Villa have suspended midfielder Barry Bannan pending an investigation after he was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving at the weekend.
Police confirmed Bannan, 21, had been arrested and released on bail after crashing his Range Rover on the M1 at approximately 5.30am on Sunday morning. Shrewsbury striker James Collins, who graduated from Villa's youth academy, was also arrested.
Villa boss Alex McLeish, in a media statement, said: "Barry Bannan has been suspended while the club carries out internal enquiries into allegations which arose last weekend. He will not be available for this weekend's game at Sunderland."
Scotland international Bannan has made ten appearances for Villa this season.
