Villas-Boas backs skipper Terry

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas believes the John Terry racism row is a misunderstanding that has been blown out of all proportion and insists his captain has the full backing of the club.

• Terry 'saddened' by claims
• Terry denies he is pet shop's boy
• Blues won't appeal Bosingwa red

Terry will find out on Tuesday if Anton Ferdinand will report him to the FA over an alleged racist slur during QPR's 1-0 victory at Loftus Road.

Ferdinand will meet with QPR manager Neil Warnock to discuss reports he was abused and will decide whether he wants the incident to be investigated.

Videos circulated on the internet in the aftermath of Sunday's Premier League match, with some claiming the footage shows Terry insulting the QPR defender using racist language.

However, Terry has categorically denied making such comments during the west London derby defeat and has vowed to clear his name of any wrongdoing.

"I'll do whatever it takes to clear my name and I don't have anything to hide. I'm not taking that level of abuse," Terry told the Daily Mail.

"Anton and I spoke for ten minutes in the dressing room after the game and there is no issue between us. It's finished."

And Blues boss Villas-Boas has also spoken out on behalf of Terry.

"He has put out his statement and we fully back John," Villas-Boas said. "John is a player who (represents) this country to the highest level internationally. He is a player of great responsibilities.''

He added: "He said to me the incident was a big misunderstanding. That's why he put his statement out straight away. I find it strange when people don't trust the words of a representative from your country.''

Although Ferdinand is yet to go public with his version of events, Villas-Boas claimed Terry and the QPR defender cleared the air in the Chelsea dressing room after Sunday's game.

"Anton was present in our dressing room,'' he said. "For us, it was end of story and it still is. It's just a misunderstanding and something blown out of all proportion. People who represent this country should have better and fuller support.''

Villas-Boas added: "The clubs are in touch with each other. We have full backing for our player. The rest, we have to wait and see.''

The alleged incident occurred as Chelsea completely lost their discipline as two sending-offs, seven yellow cards and a penalty handed QPR a first win over their arch-rivals for 16 years.

Scotland Yard have confirmed that police are also "assessing" the allegations after receiving a complaint from a member of the public.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that police have been notified of an incident on Sunday 23 October involving alleged racial abuse. This is currently being assessed by officers from Hammersmith and Fulham."
