Roma reveal Guardiola approach

Roma general manager Franco Baldini has revealed he approached Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in the summer in an attempt to entice the Spanish tactician to move to the Serie A.

Baldini, a close adviser to Fabio Capello, ultimately selected Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique to take the to job in the Italian capital, but said on Friday the club initially targeted Guardiola.

"I had a word with Guardiola," said Baldini. "I asked him if he fancied taking a step towards Roma. He responded by saying perhaps in a few years' time."

Baldini, though, believes Roma made the right choice in appointing Enrique once Guardiola made it clear he was no longer an option.

"I liked him from the start. I instantly adored him as a person and the facts are proving me right.

"This is his first real experience, but he is talented and he has to make his own mistakes. He's going to be a great coach.

"I want him to be that immediately and he has all the characteristics to do so. We now have to give him the elements to succeed," said Baldini.
