New York down Galaxy

Goals by Luke Rodgers and Thierry Henry guided New York Red Bulls to a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer on Tuesday evening.

Rodgers put the hosts ahead in the 31st minute before former Arsenal forward Henry sealed victory with half an hour of the game remaining.

While David Beckham started for Los Angeles, the Galaxy was missing USA national team star Landon Donovan, sidelined by a strained right quadriceps.

New York went ahead when Rodgers scored after a Joel Lindpere corner kick went to Jan Gunnar Solli, who outjumped defender Frankie Hejduk. Solli's header went off the gloves of goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, and Rodgers pounced.

Before a crowd of 25,186, the teams played a match that was originally scheduled for last month but was postponed because of Hurricane Irene.

Henry then bagged his 14th league goal of the season, tying former team-mate Dwayne De Rosario as the MLS' leading goalscorer. The former France national team striker scored off a pinpoint pass from Mexican captain Rafa Marquez, before beating A.J. DelLaGarza down the right flank and tapping home past Ricketts.

It was only the Galaxy's fourth defeat in 32 games while it guided New York to third in the Eastern Conference, one point behind leaders Sporting Kansas City.
