Ritchie relishing Tannadice trip

Falkirk chairman Martin Ritchie insists the club's young players will not be fazed by a trip to Dundee United in the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter-finals after dumping Rangers out of the competition.

Cash-strapped First Division side Falkirk, packed with teenagers from their academy, caused the shock of the third-round on Wednesday night with a dramatic 3-2 home win over Scottish champions Rangers.

The Bairns missed fellow lower league clubs Ayr United and East Fife in the draw made today at Braidwood Motor Company Stadium, Livingston, and will travel to Tannadice on October 25 or 26 but Ritchie has no fears.

"That win over Rangers means a lot to a club like Falkirk," he said. "It was a great occasion and you have to savour these moments.

"Tannadice won't be the easiest place to go in the next round and Dundee United will clearly be the favourites but I think the young players showed last night that they have the maturity and the composure not to be fazed by it, they will go up and put in another performance.

"The players didn't panic or rush things against Rangers, they played the game that they wanted to play and it was great for them. We have worked very hard on our academy and although in some ways we have been forced to use those players, all that work has paid off because the young players are coming through and they are ready.

"We had five players from our academy in the starting 11 and the entire bench were from the academy but you wouldn't have known it watching some of them."

Second Division East Fife, who beat Aberdeen in a penalty shoot-out at Pittodrie following a 3-3 draw on Tuesday night, were drawn away to Kilmarnock.

Celtic cruised to a 2-0 win over First Division Ross County in Dingwall last night and will play Hibernian at Easter Road.

Ayr United, bottom of the First Division, beat Hearts in a penalty shoot-out at Somerset Park last night following a 1-1 draw and will travel to take on St Mirren.
