Patrick van Aanholt has taken inspiration from Tom Cleverley's successful spell at Wigan Athletic after the Dutchman followed in the Englishman's footsteps by joining the Latics on loan.
Manchester United midfielder Cleverley enjoyed a successful season-long loan at the DW Stadium last campaign, featuring in 25 Premier League matches for Wigan, with the experience helping him to break into United's first-team this campaign.
Chelsea left-back Van Aanholt, 21, who has previously spent time on loan at Leicester, Newcastle and Coventry, is now eager to gain similar valuable competitive action at Wigan that he hopes will stand him in good stead for his future.
He said: "I want to try and emulate what Tom Cleverley did here last season. He took his opportunity and is now playing regularly in the Premier League at Manchester United. If I can make the most of my season at Wigan Athletic hopefully it will help me to achieve something similar."
