UAE sack Katanec after qualifying loss

The United Arab Emirates Football Association is searching for a new national team coach after sacking Slovenian Srecko Katanec following Al Abyad's dismal World Cup qualifying defeat to Lebanon.

• Duerden on Asian World Cup qualifying

Katanec's side were beaten 3-1 on Tuesday - a second successive loss in Asian qualifying - and UAE now sit bottom of Group B.

The former Slovenia and Macedonia coach was promptly fired, leaving UAE searching for a replacement before their next qualifier, a daunting trip to Asian giants South Korea.

Fluminense coach Abel Braga has already been approached, but rejected the chance to return to the UAE, where he managed Al-Jazira between 2008 and 2011.

With four World Cup qualifying fixtures remaining, there are reports that UAE may field their Under-23 side in a bid to give them more competitive experience ahead of 2012 qualifers in September.

In the volatile world of West Asian football, Katanec's two-year spell was particularly impressive - but the UAE have now lost patience with the Slovenian, who only won two of his 11 fixtures in charge.
