Palermo replace Pioli with Mangia

Palermo have sacked manager Stefano Pioli and promoted youth team coach Devis Mangia to take his place on a caretaker basis.

Pioli, 45, finds himself out of a job after failing to guide Palermo into the Europa League proper, with the Rosanero having crashed out of the third qualifying round at the hands of Swiss side FC Thun.

Palermo confirmed the decision to axe former Chievo and Parma boss Pioli on their official wesbite and most of his staff have also left the club, with goalkeeping coach Graziani Vinti the only one remaining.

Mangia steps into the breach ahead of the start of the Serie A season, with Palermo taking on Inter Milan in their opening league fixture next Sunday.

However, Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini - who sacked Pioli after believing he had lost the support of the players - revealed on Thursday that Mangia's appointment was only on a temporary basis and he is already searching for a permanent successor.

"I saw that the team was no longer following the coach so I had to intervene and sack him,'' Zamparini said. "There was no confidence in him and I was worried that we would be heading in the wrong direction.

"(Former Palermo coach) Delio Rossi has asked me to give him some time,'' Zamparini said. "I like him and he knows the players and the club well. I also like Claudio Ranieri and I contacted him but he might be considering other offers.

"In the meantime, we will continue as we are until one of the two (Rossi or Ranieri) becomes available.''
