BATE Borisov swoop for Kezman

Journeyman striker Mateja Kezman has joined Belarusian champions BATE Borisov, with the club confirming he will be unveiled at a press conference on Thursday.

Kezman, 32, had been a free agent for three months after a short-term deal with South China FC ended and he now returns to Europe looking to rebuild his reputation with BATE in this season's Champions League.

Once considered one of the continent's most prolific strikers after scoring 105 league goals in 122 games during a four-year spell with PSV, Kezman's standing has plummeted since an ill-fated switch to Chelsea in 2004.

A disastrous season at Stamford Bridge saw him bag just seven goals in 41 games and subsequent moves to Atletico Madrid and PSG produced similarly paltry results, though he showed glimpses of his previous form when scoring 30 goals in 69 appearances for Fenerbahce.

PSG terminated Kezman's contract last November and he went on to join Hong Kong outfit South China in January.

BATE Borisov begin their Champions League campaign in two weeks time with a trip to Czech side Viktoria Plzen, but face an uphill sturggle to progress from their group, which also includes reigning European champions Barcelona and Italian giants AC Milan.
