Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil insists the La Liga giants are on the same level as bitter rivals Barcelona, despite their recent Supercopa loss.
Ozil joined Madrid from Werder Bremen last season, and believes the squad have made significant improvements over the current summer, bringing in the likes of Hamit Altintop, Jose Maria Callejon, Fabio Coentrao, Nuri Sahin and Raphael Varane.
Madrid lost the Supercopa to their Catalan rivals as Ozil - along with team-mate Marcelo - was shown a red card for participating in an ugly on-field melee. The Germany international says the performance by Real up until that moment, proved they are ready to compete with Barca both domestically and in the Champions League.
"We lost the Supercopa in an unfortunate manner but both matches showed we are on Barcelona's level," Ozil told Bild.
The playmaker is also pleased with Madrid's start to the La Liga season, after the club thrashed Zaragoza 6-0 in their opening game.
"I am completely happy, it was a wonderful victory and also an important one. Starting the season well is something that gives us confidence," Ozil said.
