Saints win, Di Canio explodes
Southampton proved too strong for Swindon in the Carling Cup but had to hold off a spirited fightback by the League Two side to secure a 3-1 win.
First half goals by Guly Do Prado and Jonathan Forte, together with a late strike from Ricky Lambert were enough to book Saints' passage into round three. Swindon pulled a goal back late on through Mehdi Kerrouche but by then Southampton had given the home side a footballing lesson.
Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio was involved in a heated confrontation with striker Leon Clarke after the game. The hot-headed Italian could be seen remonstrating with forward Clarke as the team left the pitch. The former West Ham striker appeared to manhandle Clarke towards the tunnel and the pair seemed to be pushing and shoving before being separated.
A goal deep into the five minutes of added time by Leyton Orient captain Steve Dawson clinched a dramatic 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers at Brisbane Road.
It also secured a Carling Cup third-round tie at Blackburn having seen first-half goals by David Mooney and Ben Chorley cancelled out by strikes from Chris Zebroski and Eliot Richards after the break.
League Two Aldershot followed up their Carling Cup shock defeat of West Ham with an impressive 2-0 victory over League One Carlisle.
Michael Rankine's opener just before the break gave Dean Holdsworth's side a surprise lead before Anthony Straker's deflected second-half effort put the result beyond doubt to give the Shots their first home win of the season.
