Man City fail in bid for Van Bommel

Manchester City have failed with a fresh bid for AC Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel, according to the player himself.

• Dzeko grateful to Mancini
• Santa Cruz joins Real Betis
• Aguero wants Tevez to stay

Van Bommel, 34, has extended his one-year contract by another year after winning the Scudetto with the club and has now revealed that, after making a bid for him in January, City have been rebuffed after making a new offer.

"Manchester City first tried to sign me last winter, they were one of the clubs interested in me, so their interest has not come out of the blue," he told Voetbal International.

"But Milan has a very clear position and I am perfectly happy to live with that, my family feels at home here. I feel good as a footballer here and feel fully appreciated."

Van Bommel's agent Mino Raiola also confirmed the reason for City's bid was because they would be losing Yaya Toure over the winter when he plays in the African Cup of Nations.

"The message of AC Milan was clear. Mark van Bommel is not for sale under any circumstances," Raiola confirmed. "They have the problem that Yaya Toure will spend considerable time out because of the matches for the African Cup.

"In addition, they also know that Mark van Bommel is excellent alongside Nigel de Jong. Hence they came in again for him."
