Rules prevent Lukaku loan to Stoke

Stoke's attempts to bring in Chelsea's new striker, Romelu Lukaku, on loan until January have failed after the Premier League said that a player cannot join another club on loan if he has been registered in the same transfer window.

• Chelsea fail in Meireles bid
• Benayoun in talks over exit
• Lampard unfazed by rivals' start

Lukaku, 18, joined the Blues this summer for a fee of around £18 million and made his home debut as a substitute in last weekend's 3-1 victory over Norwich City.

Frank Lampard described the Belgian youngster as a ''powerhouse" this week but, with Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres and Nicolas Anelka in pole position for the striking roles at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku is not guaranteed to play and was thought to favour a move out on loan.

However, with reports suggesting he was in negotiations with Stoke, the Premier League pointed out Rule M.7.1 which says ''a Temporary Transfer to a Club may not take place in the Transfer Window in which the Transferor Club acquired the Player's registration''

Lukaku will now be prevented from joining another club on loan until the January transfer window opens.
