Green pulls out of England squad

England have a goalkeeper crisis ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales after West Ham's Rob Green withdrew from the squad with a finger injury.

• Capello calls on England kids

Green reported for duty at England's training base at the Grove in Watford on Monday but it was immediately obvious he would not be able to play any part in the build-up to the Group G encounter in Sofia and he has returned to his club for treatment.

On-loan Ipswich goalkeeper David Stockdale is already Joe Hart's understudy but manager Fabio Capello has added another Championship stopper to the ranks to replace Green: Derby's Frankie Fielding.

Fielding, 23, was the first-choice keeper for England at the recent European Under-21 Championships and first got his call-up to the senior side a year ago when he replaced Ben Foster in the squad to face Hungary at Wembley.

So far Fielding has enjoyed a good start to his season as he has kept two clean sheets and conceded only three goals in five league games, but he is expected to play no part in the qualifiers and has only been called up as backup.

Meanwhile, England U-21 boss Stuart Pearce has lost Emmanuel Frimpong and Martin Kelly for the upcoming double-header with Azerbaijan and Israel.

Pearce was already searching for a new captain after Phil Jones was called into the senior squad, while Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck has been ruled out for several weeks with a hamstring problem.

Frimpong, who missed Arsenal's 8-2 humiliation at Old Trafford through injury yesterday, has now joined Welbeck in withdrawing after receiving his maiden call-up last week.

Kelly lasted just 30 minutes of Liverpool's 3-1 win over Bolton on Saturday and was also forced to pull out of his country's European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan on Thursday and friendly against Israel four days later.
