Birthday boy De Jong sends Twente top

Luuk de Jong scored twice on his 21st birthday to lead FC Twente back to the top of the Eredivisie as last season's runners-up beat VVV Venlo 4-1 to leapfrog Ajax.

Having seen Ajax move to the summit with a 4-1 win over Vitesse Arnhem on Friday, Twente matched their rivals to maintain their 100% record as goals from Bryan Ruiz and Marc Janko complemented De Jong's strikes.

Ahmed Musa claimed a fine individual goal to restore parity at 1-1, but it lasted just two minutes before De Jong notched, leaving VVV without a win this season and Twente with a boost after their Champions League disappointment in midweek.

Heracles Almelo saw their unbeaten start ended with a 2-1 defeat at NEC Nijmegen. Peter Bosz's side came into this fixture with a win and two draws to their name, but found themselves two goals down within eight minutes at De Goffert with Lasse Schone and Nick van der Velden hitting the mark.

Heracles threatened a comeback when Glynor Plet reduced arrears at the end of the first half, but that was as good as it got for the visitors.

NAC Breda's slow start to the new Eredivisie season continued as they lost 2-1 at RKC Waalwijk. Evander Sno and Adil Auassar put the hosts in control with Anthony Lurling grabbing a late consolation for NAC. Last season's Eerste Divisie champions have taken seven points from their first four fixtures.

FC Utrecht came from a goal down to claim a 3-1 win over Roda JC. Mads Junker put the visitors ahead after 38 minutes but Thomas Oar levelled six minutes later, before second-half strikes from Rodney Sneijder and Jacob Mulenga sealed the points for the hosts.
