Barton joins QPR on four-year deal

QPR have completed the signing of Joey Barton form Newcastle on a four-year contract, the London club confirmed on Friday.

• Blog: Barton a perfect fit for QPR

Barton, 28, has been linked with a move away from Newcastle United all summer, with the club seemingly unwilling to match his demands of a new contract. The midfielder will wear the No. 17 shirt for QPR this season and says he is relishing a new chapter in his career.

"The ambition of the club really impressed me," Barton told QPR's official site. "There's obviously a great set of lads here already and that's why they had such a great season in the Championship.

"The gaffer (Neil Warnock) is talking about adding two or three more bodies and that, combined with the potential of the club and the new owners' ambitions, bodes really well for the future."

But the outspoken midfielder could not resist a parting shot at the Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias on Twitter after deciding not to see out the final year of his existing contract on Tyneside.

He tweeted: "I will always have a special relationship with the Geordie nation but sadly they are not the decision makers at St James' Park.

"I wish to thank each and everyone of them sincerely for their support. I am incredibly excited to be joining QPR at this pivotal time in their history and plan to give my all for the club.''

QPR boss Warnock was equally excited about the first signing at Loftus Road since AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes completed his takeover of the club last week.

"He's coming here to show people what he can do," Warnock said. "He wants to get back into the England team. He's very enthusiastic. People will say one or two things about him, but they've said stuff about me in the past too, so I won't worry about that.

"He's a winner. Even without the armband on, he's a captain every week. He's a lot better play than people give him credit for. Hopefully we can harness all his positive characteristics and get the best out of him."

Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias said: "On behalf of everyone at Newcastle we wish to thank Joey for his on-field contributions to the team and we wish him every success for his future at Queens Park Rangers.''
