Norwich and QPR dumped out

A Norwich team displaying 11 changes from the weekend fell to an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to League One outfit MK Dons in the Carling Cup second round clash at Carrow Road.

A howler from new signing Daniel Ayala gifted MK Dons the lead on 21 minutes, with Sam Baldock pouncing on a careless square pass from the former Liverpool defender, before feeding Luke Chadwick who found the target.

Baldock continued to torment Paul Lambert's side six minutes later, picking the ball up inside his own half before driving at the home defence - who were inexplicably reluctant to close him down - and hammering home from 20 yards.

The game slipped out of Norwich's grip on the hour mark as Chadwick danced into the area before producing another clinical finish, rounding off a fine passing move. Daniel Powell made it four on 67 minutes, intercepting a poorly-judged backpass from Andrew Surman before heaping more woe on the Canaries.

In the first home game since Tony Fernandes' takeover, QPR fell to a 2-0 defeat against League One's Rochdale.

The Dale took a shock lead on five minutes when Ashley Grimes' shot was parried into the path of Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro, who made no mistake from close range, and Gary Jones sealed the win with nine minutes remaining.

Swansea remain winless this season after slumping to a surprise 3-1 defeat at League Two side Shrewsbury.

The Shrews suffered a self-inflicted blow on eight minutes as Shane Cansdell-Sherriff nodded a long ball forward past his own goalkeeper, but they were back on level terms 11 minutes later when Marvin Morgan came steaming in at the back post to convert a cross.

And the game was turned on its head after 67 minutes thanks to a strike from Shrews' Mark Wright, who netted from Terry Gornell's pass. Nicky Wroe slotted in an injury-time free-kick to put some gloss on the scoreline - and give Swansea grounds for concern early in a maiden Premier League campaign.

Sunderland are still searching for their first win of a season after suffering a 1-0 reverse against Championship high-flyers Brighton, Craig Mackail-Smith scoring the winner in extra time.

League Two strugglers Hereford resisted Aston Villa for 80 minutes, with goalkeeper David Cornell having the game of his life, then Eric Lichaj finally broke through before Nathan Delfouneso earned Villa a 2-0 win. Wolves continued their 100% start to the season with a 4-0 success over Northampton at Sixfields.

Having missed a couple of presentable chances in the early stages, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake eventually got his name on the scoresheet on the half hour, collecting Kevin Foley's 40-yard pass on his chest before letting the ball drop and slotting in a half-volley.

Northampton responded well to falling behind, pressing forward and working three decent opportunities, but it was Wolves who doubled their lead on 37 minutes, Nenad Milijas curling in a free-kick after Adam Hammill was brought down.

Ebanks-Blake grabbed his second with 15 minutes remaining, then Sam Vokes found the target in the dying moments.

Roy Hodgson, who tasted Carling Cup defeat against Northampton as Liverpool manager last year, laid those ghosts to rest as he watched his West Brom team win 4-1 at Bournemouth.

With the first attack they managed, the visitors took the lead through Jerome Thomas, who produced a composed finish after collecting a through-ball that bisected the hosts' defence. And the Baggies gave themselves breathing space three minutes before the break as Marc Antoine-Fortune converted Graham Dorrans' inviting cross.

Two minutes into the second half, Steve Lovell halved the deficit by slamming home a cut-back from Scott Malone after Hodgson's side failed to clear the initial danger - but West Brom crushed the fightback almost immediately afterwards, Simon Cox netting from the edge of the box after collecting Billy Jones' pass. Antoine-Fortune's second rounded off the scoring with just over ten minutes left.

League One outfit Charlton beat Championship side Reading 2-1 at The Valley while Nottingham Forest beat Wycombe 4-1.

Championship sides Leeds and Leicester recorded away wins, at Doncaster and Bury respectively while Millwall beat Morecambe 2-0 and Burnley beat Barnet 3-2 after extra time.

Cardiff scored an injury time goal to force their tie with Huddersfield into extra time and promptly ran out 5-3 winners while Bristol Rovers knocked out Watford 4-2 on penalties.
