Rangers go top, Celtic stutter

Injury-ravaged Rangers bounced back from their Europa League loss to Maribor by inflicting Motherwell's first defeat of the season, 3-0, in the Premier League.

• Saturday's wrap: Dons get boost

Gregg Wylde scored his first Rangers goal to complete an emphatic win for the champions following goals from Steven Naismith and Kyle Lafferty.

Naismith got the last touch as Rangers took the lead after 20 minutes; Nikica Jelavic's powerful header deflected off the striker following Steven Davis' corner. Lafferty then doubled Rangers' advantage after blasting a low shot on the stroke of half-time.

Motherwell's Chris Humphrey hit the bar after the break, but Gers duo Davis and Naismith were also denied by the woodwork.

Rangers' win sees them leapfrog the previously unbeaten Motherwell to top spot in the SPL on goal difference as rivals Celtic missed the chance to go two points clear following a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to St Johnstone.

Dave MacKay scored the only goal of the game after an hour, volleying past Fraser Forster after the Hoops keeper had parried Jody Morris' long-range effort. Despite Celtic's desperate attempts to find an equaliser, the Perthshire side hung on for an unlikely three points.

Kilmarnock and Hearts shared the spoils after an entertaining but goalless match at Rugby Park.

The hosts created the majority of the chances, including a first-minute James Dayton free-kick and further opportunities for Paul Heffernan in each half, plus a close call by Gary Harkins after the break.

Hearts had fewer opportunities but saw Stephen Elliott hit the woodwork at the end of the first half and have a goal disallowed for offside in the 83rd minute.
