Raul snubs Blackburn approach

Schalke striker Raul has rejected a move to Blackburn Rovers, the German club have confirmed.

Raul, 34, is reported to be unhappy in Germany after a series of disagreements with coach Ralf Rangnick over his role in the side. He scored for Schalke in their win over Cologne on Saturday but his muted celebration added fuel to rumours that he was on his way out.

But after Schalke's general manager Horst Heldt said on Tuesday that Blackburn had made an approach for the striker, a statement on the club's website confirmed Raul was staying put.

It read: "This Tuesday FC Schalke 04 took an official request from Blackburn Rovers, which told of the Premier League club's interest in signing Raul."

It quoted Heldt as saying: "Both our coach Ralf Rangnick and my colleague Peter Peters and I have always stressed that we do not want him to leave."

Heldt continued: "Raul told us that he wants to stay with Schalke 04 and asked us to cancel talks with Blackburn Rovers. We are pleased that Raul wants to continue to contribute to our sporting success. "

Rovers are looking to add to their depleted squad after losing 2-1 at home to Wolves in their opening game of the Premier League season.

Raul's close friend and former Real Madrid team-mate Michel Salgado plays for Rovers, who are keen to bolster their attacking ranks after Nikola Kalinic joined Ukrainian side Dnipro.
