Leverkusen secure first victory

Robin Dutt celebrated his first victory in charge of Bayer Leverkusen as a Michal Kadlec goal was enough to see off Werder Bremen 1-0 at the BayArena.

• Saturday's Bundesliga review

Kadlec scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute to help Leverkusen pick up their first win of the campaign and lift them up to mid-table.

Leverkusen coach Dutt sprang a surprise in his team selection by choosing Michael Ballack over Simon Rolfes, even giving the former Germany international the captain's armband.

On-loan goalkeeper Bernd Leno was also handed his debut in goal instead of David Yelldell, and he had a rather quiet first 45 minutes as the home side set about making amends for their 2-0 defeat in Mainz last weekend.

It was Kadlec who scored the decisive goal five minutes from time. His first effort - a header from Gonzalo Castro's corner - was blocked, but he made no mistake with the second bite of the cherry to earn Leverkusen all three points.

Bundesliga new boys Augsburg maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw at Kaiserslautern. Sascha Molders scored his third goal in two games to put Augsburg in front in the ninth minute, but Etey Shechter levelled for the hosts 10 minutes from time.

Kaiserslautern were the first to threaten when Shechter turned a shot straight at goalkeeper Simon Jentzsch from 12 yards. But the visitors soon went in front as summer signing Molders received the ball in the area, held off Mathias Abel and fired a left-footed shot into the top corner.

Kaiserslautern's Rodnei created the home side's equaliser in the 80th minute. The Brazlian's pass found Shechter, who raced into the area before shooting low into the bottom corner to earn his side a point.
