Gignac must lose weight

Marseille have sent striker Andre-Pierre Gignac to an Italian health centre to lose weight as he continues his recovery from groin surgery.

Gignac, 25, who went under the knife in May, is to spend a week in the spa town of Merano, where he will undergo an individually tailored programme in order to regain peak physical fitness.

Marseille doctor Christophe Baudot told the club's official website: "He didn't put on much weight after the surgery but we want him to lose weight and we've had trouble achieving that in recent weeks.

"Three or four kilos too much for a top-level athlete can hold them back.''

Gignac will return to France on Monday and is expected to resume squad training before the end of the month with a view to being back in contention to play in September.

Baudot added: "Within a fortnight, he will be back with the group. But between the return to training and the return to action, there will be a delay. The goal is to get Andre-Pierre Gignac back to his best.''

Gignac scored eight Ligue 1 goals in 30 appearances for Marseille last term after joining Didier Deschamps' side from Toulouse a year ago.
