Korea name strong squad

Korea have named a strong 24-man squad for their August 10 friendly against neighbouring rivals Japan.

Coach Cho Kwang-Rae announced the team ahead of Korea's final warm-up before they begin their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign. The coach is holding nothing back, deploying 15 overseas-based players and nine from the K-League.

Cho's selections were also influenced by the match-fixing scandal currently engulfing Korea's domestic competition, forcing the 57-year-old to cast his eye toward players in the J.League and Europe.

"The situation is still messy in the K-League, and I decided I would rather recall guys playing overseas and turn things around for Korean football," he said.

"And it's Korea against Japan, and fans will pay attention. We will prepare the best we can."

Hamburg's teenage forward Son Heung-Min is one of the players to be recalled by Cho after impressing the national team coach by scoring 18 goals in nine games during the German club's pre-season matches.

"At first, he made the team with his youthful exuberance and I believe he has learned playing on the national team is quite different from what he'd thought," Cho said. "I have high expectations of him."

New Sunderland signing Ji Dong-Won has been named in the squad, but Cho revealed he would allow the midfielder to remain in England should he be selected for the Black Cats' Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 13.
