Columbus Crew 0-3 Newcastle

Shola Ameobi was on the scoresheet as Newcastle secured a comfortable 3-0 win in their friendly against MLS side the Columbus Crew.

Ameobi netted the opener in just the ninth minute to give the visiting Premier League side the perfect start, capitalising on an error by the home defence before slotting past Andy Gruenebaum.

Gruenebaum was then dismissed for a handball outside the area on the stroke of half-time and Newcastle took advantage after the break, adding to their tally through defender Fabricio Coloccini and Haris Vuckic.

The Crew were already without starting goalkeeper William Hesmer and third-choice Alex Riggs because of injuries, and after Gruenebaum's dismissal emergency shot-stopper Chris Konopka had to take over the gloves despite arriving in Columbus only six hours before the match.

Coloccini nabbed a second goal in the 53rd-minute after a poor clearance from a corner kick fell to the Argentine, while Vuckic made sure of the win in injury time with a fierce strike that ricocheted off the right post before bulging the back of the net.
