Shearer: Newcastle need to spend

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes that the club have to spend some of the £35 million received from the sale of Andy Carroll on another top striker.

• Ben Arfa injury scare

Shearer, who took over the management of the club ahead of their relegation two years ago, was disappointed at the board's decision to cash in on Carroll, but warned that there could be trouble ahead if they do not bring in some new blood.

The Magpies have, so far, added only Demba Ba to their squad on a free transfer from West Ham - while the club's top scorer last season, Kevin Nolan, has been sold to the Upton Park club.

"Everyone was obviously disappointed that Andy Carroll left,'' Shearer told the Daily Mirror. ''But it was understandable when you look at the money they got for him - £35m is a hell of a lot of cash.

"Of course, you don't want to lose your top players and Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan were probably Newcastle's two best players. I would be surprised if they did not go out and spend some more money.

"I hope that they do because they had a decent season on their return to the Premier League. If they can improve again next season - that is all the fans want. Last season was decent and now the supporters will be looking for Alan Pardew to take them into the top 10."
