Stekelenburg set for Roma?

Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg could be set for a move to Roma, his agent has confirmed.

Stekelenburg, 28, who has won 40 caps for Netherlands, has just one season left on his contract with Ajax and could now be moving to the Italian capital under new Roma coach Luis Enrique.

His agent Rob Jansen, quoted in Voetbal International, said: "The negotiations are still very difficult. The clubs are still far apart, but today we continue to negotiate in Amsterdam. Ajax has no set deadline.

"Maarten would be keen on a move to Roma, otherwise I would not be in talks with the club.''

Ajax coach Frank de Boer said on Monday: "We want to clarify whether (Stekelenburg) is staying or not and whether he wants to extend his current contract. If not, then a winter transfer seems probable.''

Roma recently sold Brazilian goalkeeper Alexander Doni to Liverpool but still have Romanian Bogdan Lobont and another Brazilian, Julio Sergio, on their books.

One player staying in Amsterdam will be Siem de Jong, with the midfielder having now signed a contract extension until 2015 which was agreed in principle in May.

"I am happy to sign, I'm fine here and enjoying myself and for my development it is also good that I stay with Ajax,'' the 22-year-old said. "My goal is that we as a team continue to be champions and that I can make the greatest possible contribution to that.''
