Coates expects striker signing

Stoke chairman Peter Coates says that the club will capture a new striker before the transfer window closes, having seen a move for West Ham's Carlton Cole collapse.

Stoke are negotiating with Birmingham's Cameron Jerome, but talks are reported to have stalled and with attacking options limited by Turkish striker Tuncay's exit in January and the end of John Carew's loan deal, the priority for boss Tony Pulis is to bring in a new frontman.

"It is true a striker remains Tony's priority and we would expect that to happen,'' Coates told the Daily Star. ''We are confident we will be able to improve the squad before the deadline closes and there is a long way to go before that happens of course.

"We are working on a few things, but football is a messy business and these things take time."

Stoke have, so far, only landed former Tottenham man Jonathan Woodgate on a free, but they have also been linked with England striker Peter Crouch.
