Cuellar close to Rangers return

Rangers manager Ally McCoist has confirmed a fee has been agreed with Aston Villa for defender Carlos Cuellar.

• Gers hopeful over duo

Cuellar left Rangers for Villa in 2008 for £7.8 million and has since made 60 Premier League starts for the club.

Last season, though, the Spaniard slipped down the pecking order at Villa, sparking speculation that his future lies away from the Midlands side.

McCoist has identified Cuellar, 29, as a summer transfer target, and is closing in on bringing the centre-half back to Ibrox.

He told Sky Sports News: "That would be great but there is still a bit of work to be done.

"A fee has been agreed between the clubs. In an ideal world we would get the deal over the line and get Carlos up to rejoin us because he was a wonderful player for us and was thought of very highly.

"We have made no secret of the fact we want him back, so hopefully Carlos and one or two others will join us in the next week."

David Weir, 41, has signed a one-year extension to stay at Ibrox for a fifth season.

On the pitch, McCoist celebrated his first victory as Gers manager with a convincing 4-1 friendly defeat of Linfield at Windsor Park this weekend, with Weir as captain.

McCoist, who inherited the job from Walter Smith at the end of last season, endured three defeats on the recent pre-season tour of Germany but will have been buoyed by a strong showing in Belfast.

New signing Juan Manuel Ortiz opened the scoring before Steven Naismith, Nikica Jelavic and Sasa Papac all added to the scoreline, while Michael Carvil netted a consolation for Linfield.
