Baldini to quit after qualifiers

The Football Association has revealed England general manager Franco Baldini is to leave his role at the end of the nation's Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

• Fabio Capello profile

Baldini will join Serie A club Roma "immediately after" England's final qualifying outing, currently scheduled to be against Montenegro on October 7.

Fabio Capello has worked closely with Baldini since taking over as England head coach in 2008, with the latter's command of the English language proving an asset.

Baldini has been used as the main contact with Capello's players, but speculation has readily linked him with a move to Roma. And after lengthy talks between the pair, an agreement was reached over Baldini's future.

He could, though, return to the England fold on an unpaid basis for a possible friendly in February 2012, and also at next years' European Championships, should the Three Lions qualify.

Capello said on the FA's official website: "Franco has been given a good opportunity by Roma, but I am happy he will stay with me and the England team until after the qualification programme.

"For me this is very important. We can decide after this if Franco will be with us for the European Championships."

FA chairman David Bernstein said: "We respect his decision to accept the offer from Roma. I would like to thank Franco for the professional way in which he has handled this and maintained his sole commitment to working with Fabio and the team until after the qualifying games."
