United bid for Sneijder in the balance

Manchester United will decide in the next 48 hours whether to push through a £35 million deal for Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder but ESPNsoccernet sources believe the player's wage demands may still prove a stumbling block.

Sneijder, 27, initially demanded wages of £250,000-a-week to switch to Old Trafford but United have refused point blank to meet that figure. However, indications are that the Dutch star would be willing to come down to £190,000-a-week - a more acceptable proposition for the Premier League champions.

On Tuesday, Inter director Marco Branca stated that Sneijder "is not for sale", amid rumours that United and Chelsea are keen to bring him to the Premier League for around £35 million.

But it was claimed the Red Devils upped the ante in their pursuit of the Netherlands international by sending a delegation, led by chief executive David Gill, to Milan.

In fact, Gill flew to Zurich for a European Club Association meeting and a source told ESPNsoccernet that the total financial package involved is of concern to United.

''David Gill has not rushed out to Milan to sign the player, as it has been suggested - he went to Zurich,'' the source said. ''I don't think Manchester United will go through with any deal for Sneijder, when you examine the finances involved, in particular the player's wages."

Sneijder, 27, joined Inter from Real Madrid in 2009 and helped the club win a memorable Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble in 2010.

A potential deal for the former Ajax and Real Madrid is in the balance, but United look set to make a final decision on whther to push ahead with the transfer before the weekend.
