Montero double downs Timbers

Seattle Sounders striker Fredy Montero scored two goals to help his side beat Major League Soccer rivals Portland Timbers 3-2 on Sunday.

• Beckham set for Man United reunion

The teams played to a 1-1 draw at Qwest Field back in May when they met in the season's first game of the so-called Cascadia Cup rivalry.

At Jeld-Wen Field, Portland opened the scoring in the 46th minute when Sounders defender Jeff Parke turned the past goalkeeper Kasey Keller and into his own net.

Seattle responded well, equalizing just nine minutes later when Montero curled a freekick over the wall and inside the post past a diving Troy Perkins.

Portland regained the lead in the 69th minute thanks to a great effort from Jorge Perlaza, whose deflected shot sailed over Keller and into the back of the net.

Seattle pulled level again through some great combination play between Mauro Rosales and Montero, who slotted home for his second goal of the game and his fifth of the season.

Late on in the game, Portland's Eric Brunner brought down Lamar Neagle in the box and Osvaldo Alonso converted the 83rd minute penalty to give Seattle victory.

David Beckham scored direct from a corner as Los Angeles moved five points clear at the head of the Western Conference with a 2-1 win over Chicago.

Beckham laid on a 58th-minute opener for Landon Donovan and then, after Cristian Nazarith had equalised, won the game when his delivery evaded everyone and went in.

Los Angeles are five points clear of FC Dallas, who lost 2-0 at Real Salt Lake, with Andy Williams and Edgar Espindola getting the goals.

Eastern Conference leaders New York Red Bulls were stunned at home, with DC United taking a 1-0 win thanks to Dwayne De Rosario's goal just after the hour.

San Jose and Philadelphia Union played out a 0-0 draw while Kansas City and Chivas USA drew 1-1, with Omar Bravo's injury-time goal cancelling out Nick LaBrocca's opener for Chivas.

Danny Cruz and Geoff Cameron were on target as Houston beat Toronto FC 2-0, while Colorado saw off Vancouver Whitecaps 2-1. Conor Casey and Scott Palguta netted for the Rapids, with Camilo responding.
