Modric won't force move from Spurs

Luka Modric will not force a move to Chelsea by handing in a transfer request at Tottenham Hotspur, his agent has revealed.

Spurs confirm Woodgate release
• Levy tells Modric he is not for sale

Modric is the subject of interest from Chelsea, with Spurs having rejected a bid in the region of £22 million earlier in the summer.

The Croatia international returned from his summer break on Wednesday and headed straight to White Hart Lane for showdown talks with Tottenham owner Daniel Levy.

The conversation was somewhat brief, with Modric leaving barely 30 minutes after arriving, and Levy emerged to reveal that the midfielder was not for sale at any price.

Mega rich Chelsea may not be deterred and further bids could be in the offing, but Modric will offer no encouragement to the Blues by tabling a transfer request.

"I don't think he'll hand in a transfer request," Modric's representative Nikky Vuksan said. "He will honour his contract.

"He wants to play Champions League and win trophies. The only way we can resolve this is to sit down and talk. Luka will report today for training and will do his best, as always.

"I have never been in a situation before where a player has had to fight a club and it's not something we want to do. The only official offer so far is from Chelsea and we haven't talked to any clubs. It's no surprise that there is interest in Luka though, because he is a top, top player."

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp believes Modric is "confused" but remains convinced the player is happy at White Hart Lane.

"He's walked in today and is happy, but the kid's a bit confused at the moment," Redknapp told Sky Sports News. "Other teams want him but we want him here and I want to keep him.

"He loves playing here. It's a difficult situation for him and I understand where he's coming from. We can't kid ourselves. He signed a contract here, we love him here and want him here. We don't want to sell our best players.

"He's a special player for us. We want him here and need him here."

Modric's Tottenham team-mate Rafael van der Vaart added the Croatian was "a little bit disappointed" that he was not given the chance to talk to Chelsea.

"He was happy to see us, but maybe a little bit disappointed," Van der Vaart told Sky Sports News. "I can understand it, it's not easy when a club wants to buy you. Sometimes it's good to change your club.

"But I think he's happy here and he told me he likes to play with us, and I'm pleased he's staying."

Asked if he got the feeling Modric wanted to move to Chelsea, Van der Vaart replied: "I don't know, that's not what he told me. He loves to stay here, in London, and now we have a good chance next season to win against Chelsea!

"We want to be in the top four again and to do that we need to keep the best players."
