Meulensteen talks up Sneijder move

Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen 'cannot think of a more ideal player for our team' than current Inter playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

• Gasperini confident of Sneijder stay

Sneijder, 27, has previously expressed an interest in moving to the Premier League with United, following an impressive 2009-10 season which saw him lead Inter to the treble and help his country to the final of the World Cup.

Meulensteen does not believe it will be possible to fully replace the retired Paul Scholes in the heart of the United midfield, but reckons the Netherlands international would be the best possible summer addition to the squad at Old Trafford.

"The new Paul Scholes doesn't exist, just as a new Roy Keane has never emerged, but Sneijder would fit perfectly here," Meulensteen told Dutch magazine Voetbal International. "I cannot actually think of a more ideal player for our team.

"I say this not because he's a Dutchman. I've worked here for a while, I know the team inside out and I know he would be a great signing.

"He seems a perfect complement to the likes of [Javier] Hernandez, [Wayne] Rooney, Park [Ji-sung], [Ashley] Young, [Antonio] Valencia, Nani and [Ryan] Giggs.

"And, of course, Wesley has the necessary experience in top-level football. I don't know what his future is at Inter, whether he may leave or whether he's affordable. But, purely based on football skills, I say get Sneijder."

On Tuesday, new Inter manager Gian Piero Gasperini seemed to suggest that Sneijder would only leave San Siro if the club felt the price was right.

"Inter want to become even stronger. Two years ago [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic left the club but the team was strengthened and became even stronger," Gasperini said. "Wesley's situation does not worry me.

"In recent years, Inter have made fewer mistakes in the transfer market than other clubs and have made the best choices. Hence, I can only be optimistic."

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for unsettled Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri - although the pursuit of the Frenchman could be about to get more complicated after Chelsea reportedly lodged an interest on Wednesday.
