Lille boss Rudi Garcia says he could not understand why Eden Hazard would want to sign for Paris St Germain.
Hazard, 20, has been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona, but it was reported in France this week that he is now keen on a move to PSG.
However, Lille have already insisted that the player will not be sold and Garcia feels a move to the newly-rich Ligue 1 side would be a "step backwards".
Garcia told L'Equipe: "We had a chat before his holiday and we will have another one on Sunday. Hazard has acquired a certain status in Lille. We are in the Champions League as well. He will be even more influential.
"I wouldn't understand a transfer to PSG. Certainly next season it would be step backwards. It seems a lot more interesting playing Champions League football with the French champions."
Meanwhile, France midfielder Benoit Pedretti has completed his move to Lille from Auxerre.
Pedretti, who signed a three-year deal, said: "I am delighted to join a club that has just won two trophies and has high expectations for the future.
"This season promises to be particularly exciting with Champions League football to come. I was close to coming here last season but I ended up staying with Auxerre. Joining LOSC is a great opportunity for me so this time I took it."
